Proteus was a primordial god of the sea who was also a shapeshifter, able to turn into a snake, a lion, water, fire, or anything else he pleased. Heroes of mythology could get valuable information from him, if only they can hold onto him long enough. This painting depicts Proteus in the process of transformation.
