This painting was heavily influenced by my recent reading of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King which featured an insatiable, deformed spider-like villain. This creature, Mordred, also reminded me of the huge spiders in Tolkien's writings, Ungoliant and Shelob. These were all defined by their never ending consumption of all life and light around them. I didn't initially set out to depict this which is probably why the spider is not so anatomically accurate but I am happy with the feeling I get from it.Ā
